Based on new study, the median worker in the UK would require half a century of salary to achieve the wealth level of the wealthiest 10% of the population.
Widening Financial Divide Across Decades
The analysis analyzed financial assets data covering the Covid pandemic period and discovered that during the mid-2000s, it would have taken 38 years' worth of typical employment income to enter the wealthiest decile of the economic ladder.
A research lead associated with the study commented: "Wealth gaps in Britain are now so large that a regular employee setting aside their entire income throughout their career would remain unable to reach the top of the economic scale."
Quantifying the Financial Disparity
The research revealed that the disparity between the net worth of the median citizen and a person belonging to the richest segment was one million pounds in 2006-08, but had increased to £1.3m in real terms by 2020-22.
The analyst added: "These gaps are especially alarming as financial progression in Britain is limited – individuals who begin life wealthy tend to continue being rich, and the opposite holds true."
Comparative Financial Divide
Although the wealth gap widening in absolute terms, the share of complete net worth in the UK owned by the most affluent homes – known as "proportional economic disparity" – has been "mostly consistent since the 1980s era," as stated in the study.
During this period, total wealth in the UK rose substantially from thrice the annual GDP, to nearly seven and a half times.
Contributors of Wealth Inequality
Termed "unearned" increases, by means of rising house prices and variations in retirement fund assessments, were the main drivers of the growing financial disparity over the past decade, according to the study.
These gains typically went to senior citizens with real estate, the research shows – exacerbating the generational financial disparity.
Generational Financial Divides
The median economic difference between people in their early 30s and those in their early 60s more than doubled in real terms, from 135 thousand pounds in the mid-2000s, to £310k.
Regional Differences
Furthermore, the study revealed stark geographic differences, with the median value of net worth in 2020-22 reaching £290,000 in south-east England, where housing costs have generally grown substantially, compared with £110,000 in the north-east.
Health Crisis Years Impact
Throughout the COVID period, when millions of workers were covered under the taxpayer-backed furlough scheme, and health crisis restrictions limited opportunities for spending, the information reveals numerous families were able to save, enhancing their financial standing.
More affluent homes achieved superior outcomes, nevertheless. "The median home in the lowest-income quintile saw their cash reserves grow by only eighty pounds throughout the health crisis (across the pandemic timeframe), roughly identical to the two years pre-pandemic. On the other hand, the median home in the wealthiest fifth saw their liquid savings grow by 4,200 pounds," the analysis concludes.
